Swansea Veterans RFC was founded in 1992 by former Swansea RFC captain Bryn Evans. The club has been based since its inception at Swansea Uplands RFC in Upper Killay, Swansea.
Swansea Veterans initially comprised former players of Swansea, Mumbles and Swansea Uplands rugby clubs and was established to enable them to continue to play rugby at a purely social level in the company of former team mates and rivals. In the intervening years the club has welcomed players from other local clubs (the largest contingents being ex players of the Mynyddbach and South Gower clubs) and is open to any former players of clubs in the Swansea area who are over 35 and want to continue to enjoy the fellowship and fun of veteran’s rugby.
Our most noted member was Harry Payne, sadly no longer with us, who had the distinction of playing prop for both Swansea and Wales in victories over the 1935 All Blacks. Harry was the only player who could regard Bernie Hullin as a youngster and having been substituted during a match at La Teste at the age of 82 complained that the younger prop should have been taken off as Harry was playing better on the day! Harry’s career was cut short at the age of 93 on 22nd December 2000. |
